Online Resource Guide For Emergency Medical Technicians
An Emergency Medical Technician, or EMT, is a term used to describe a health care professional trained to respond to emergency calls, provide emergency medical services, and transport patients to the hospital via ambulance. EMTs generally take on medical situations such as fires, car accidents, or injuries that occur in the home or workplace. There are several levels that an EMT can be classified, depending on their experience and training. First level EMTs are typically the first medical technicians that arrive at the scene of an accident. They are generally trained in basic first aid and CPR. EMT levels two and three are considered intermediate. They may use defibrillators to re-start a heart to a normal rhythm, give a patient intravenous fluid (IV), place patients on a backboard in case of back or neck problems, assess patients before being transported to a hospital, and perform level one tasks such as CPR and first aid. Level four EMTs earn the title as a paramedic. They are able to perform more advanced medical procedures, give medications to patients, assist with cardiac difficulties, perform emergency intubation and tracheotomies, and help the hospital prepare a patient with severe illnesses or injuries. Nearly all emergency workers in the medical field hold a level 1 EMT status and all require education and training in their field, whether it be for paid-status or volunteer work.
